What vehicle would you buy next.
We like many are in the market for a new 4WD. Our reasons for this is to use it for Touring and 4WDing. I have been looking at many new Land Rovers since 2000. All the Land Rovers look the part and drive well but most of them are not suited for the higher level (harder core) of offroading and I am concerned about the level of electronics. In our workshop owners are spending more money in repairs on electrical issues not major issues. The lattest Land Rover Discovery and Range Rover are a absolutly beautiful piece of machinery but the biggest downfall is the number of electrics and computers onboard. Little own the complexity of the software. I have now come to the conclution a 1999> vehicle will not suit my needs and there is no Land Rover out there to fit the mould I have created. So after alot of deep thought I have decided to use an older vehicle and rebuild it with all the current upgrades available. This will be cheaper than buying a new car and it will be customized. Yes it will be an older vehicle but this is the type of vehicle that will remain with us, we are not looking at the resale in 8 years. What we are about to create is what I believe should be available from the car manufacturers who I think need to look at what they are creating. I now need to choose the base platform vehicle. This ended up being a hard choice. We wanted a vehicle that is comfortable, a few mod cons, reasonably powerful, economical, not full of electric’s, strong and able to be fully engineered. Our choices went as follows with a brief summary.
RANGE ROVER
2 door RR.
OK but getting a little old, poor wiring and with a larger family 2doors, you’ve got to be kidding! Also getting old and want an automatic.
4 door RR 82-84
Well have the door but still a touch old, poor wiring, 3.5 carbie engine and comfort OK but not quite what we want. Size of vehicle not bad.
4 door RR 85
Comfort level pretty good, Engine still too small 3.5, Automatic 727 torque flight is a great box but consumes too much power.
4 door RR 86-89
4 speed automatic that have proven to be reasonably reliable, 3.5 V8 not good, interior and drive line not too shabby at all. Possible donor with engine transplant.
4 door RR 90 to 94
OK auto good, Engine better 3.9 V8, Bloody viscous transfer case, small CV joints, Interior is what we want. Later ones having air suspension and ABS not great. Pity about EAS, ABS and the drive line but can be strengthened and modified.
HSE 1995> RR
Not in your life as a serious 4WD. Miles too many electric’s, etc, etc, etc............................
DISCOVERY
1992 Disco
2 door not an option, 4 door not bad, 3.5 V8, bugger!, 200 TDI maybe but power output a touch small maybe with mods could be OK. Interior level on par with the 1986> RR, Auto good, LT230 transfer case good, small CV joints, and the size of the car a little small. Possible
1995 MA>-Disco
4 door, great new interior, 3.9 V8 or 300 TDI, ABS, small CV joints, still smaller body and SRS. Possible.
1999 ser II Disco
Very nice vehicle, 4.0 V8 and the new TD5 diesel Love that, larger body on par with a classic RR, interior nice and comfortable. A few too many electric’s, electronic automatic, SLS, ABS, TC, SRS and some drive line problems. Possible if we can simplify the vehicle. Would love but think it will have too many electrical problems in the future.
SRS can not be modified in Australia which ended all cars with SRS at this time.
DEFENDER
1985> County or Defender
Not the vehicle for me. Absolutly too basic lacking and of the basic mod cons. Seats are not the best and even the new LR’s are very noisy. For tall people the seating is not practical at all and requires modifications. The idea is there but the execution is too far the other extreme.
Conclusion.
Not one Land Rover has what I want as a base product little own a completed product. No ABS, No EAS, Nice interior, Strong driveline, Economy with reasonable power, Space, Comfortable, Able to be modified and minimalist non fancy electronics. So this is what I believe to be the best vehicle choice’s. Range Rover’s 1986 to 1992 with no ABS or SLS. Discovery’s 1992 to 1997 with no SLS, ABS can be altered. In my opinion these are the best choice for the serious reliable 4WD This is the best base vehicle in our opinion and what I am going to build from.
