Ynt: 2001 Model Grand Cherokee 3.1 TD Hakkında
merhaba,

Detroit Diesel/VM Motori
The 3.1 litre turbo-diesel on the 1999 Grand Cherokee was developed in conjunction with Detroit Diesel/VM Motori. It has an electronic injection pump, electronically-controlled, vacuum-actuated exhaust gas recirculation, and a special catalyst to control oxides of nitrogen (NOx). Manufactured in Cento, Italy, at 13,000 units per year. It was available in European models and meets the European stage III emissions.

The 3.1 turbodiesel was also carried over, although this was replaced in 2001 by a massively superior 2.7-litre CRD
If consumption concerns you, try the 2.7CRD diesel, an engine 20% more fuel efficient than the 3.1TD it replaced, averaging an impressive 29.1mpg. Shaving two and a half seconds from the 3.1TD's sprint to sixty, the Grand Cherokee CRD manages the benchmark in 11 seconds and can comfortably cruise at over 110mph where conditions permit. The five-speed automatic transmission will be familiar to those who own an E or M-Class Mercedes, so no complaints on that score then.
he less said about the clattery 3.1TD the better.
The unlovely 3.1TD Limited starts at just under £8,250 rising to £10,800 for a well looked after 2001 51-plate edition. Better to opt instead for the smoother 2.7-litre CRD engine. It may be smaller in capacity but it musters 161bhp as opposed to the old car's 138bhp and returns better fuel figures.

Buying used
The Grand Cherokee makes a good used buy if you're after something large and robust. Few are taken seriously off road but it's worth checking underneath for off road damage. The diesels are the best choice but avoid the early 3.1 TD and aim for a 2.7 CRD - it's far more refined.
New 5-cylinder 3.1 litre VM turbodiesel with 283 lb ft torque for Y2K. VM diesel replaced by much better 5 cylinder 2.7 litre Mercedes common rail diesel (same as ML 270CDI) from February 2002.

bought a 2001 3.1 td Grand Cherokee just more than 6 months ago. This is the model with the Italian VM 5 cylinder engine, So far I have done just over 18000 km without any real problems, but if i knew then what I know today I would mot have bought it because of the following factors:
Engine parts only available from dealers and very very expensive like R1200 plus for the serpentine belt and disc pads +- R900 per set. problems with warping of front discs, be prepared to replace discs with pads or sooner. The problem is the ATE calipers that it came out with. Overseas a different make of calipers was available under warranty. Drive train issues, these vehicles have a ferocious appetite for diffs. some had a diff whine from new due to poor initial assembly. The 3.1 engines also like to crack cylinder heads (5 separate heads) As it is usually the no 5 head that cracks it may be due to the fact that the engine is mounted right back against the firewall causing insufficient cooling. The clutch packs in the rear diff also sometimes pack up.
the front and rear drive (prop) shafts is not repairable and must be replaced as a unit, last price i know of was R6000 apiece. In 2002 this engine was replaced withe the MB 270 cdi motor which is much better but expect to pay a price premium, Iget on average 8km/l in town driving and up to 9km/l on open roads at speeds up to 130 which i reckon is not bad for a 2 ton automatic vehicle. There some Jeep specialists in the Cape Town area which can result in some cost savings.
I would say stay away from the3.1. it was only here from 99 to 2002. It actually is a 5 cylinder version of the 4 cylinder 2.5 that was available in earlier model Jeeps.
